End of semester 1

... was the most stressful I've ever had. Because of the essay. I've never had an essay due in January before and now I had that deadline and the exam on the same day!!! Yeah yeah at first I was like, I'll do my research before Christmas and all that ideal mambo-jumbo. If you know me than obvs that will never happen. I got so far that I opened the blackboard at home and looked at the texts :D (didn't download any or anything) :D :D :D A huge deal for me ;)

Then I had a whole week off before the deadline and exam date, which I basically spent just stressing about it... very useful, I know... The deadline of it was changed a 100 times too :D at first it was the 14th, then he said the tenth, then I'm sure on blackboard it was the 12th, then the time initially was 10AM and finally went down to 11:59PM :D I got it done 10:40, referencing was absolute shit - a new system that I'd never done... but the essay itself wasn't too bad me thinks :D although nothing like I planned for initially (dreams).

The exam went pretty well too :) and I actually have a chance of getting a superduperproper overall mark for that module :) so excited (I'll probs jinx it now though :()

Got my new timetable too, which isn't as good as last semeste but nothing too bad... I'll write about that in a couple of weeks, when I know how it feels like etc :D

Anyway I have my weeklong holiday now - have to start collecting data for my dissertation though... but I have a good feeling about grades now :)

Scottish weather

The first of January was horrible: raining all day, so we did nothing :D Is that what my year is going to be like? They say the way you spend New Years Eve and Day is how your going to spend your year... :D We shall see..

Anyway the next day there was actually some sun to be seen and after having breakfast we were motivated to go out exploring :) While we were getting dressed it started raining again (quite heavily, I'm not whining about some drizzle). We thought to revise our plan and go underground to Mary King's close first...

When it was time to leave the rain had stopped :) On the bus we were lucky to sit on the first seats upstairs :) Today was going to be a good day. Until it started raining again, then it got worst and a mixture of snow and rain started to fall down... Did I mention the howling wind???????? And we were supposed to get off in a couple of stops!!!!

Mr. Special was slightly concerned because we were gonna go and explore Deans Village, which is just basically walking around marvelling at houses. Do you see the problem? But I told him to stay put and we'll see when our stop comes. Guess what!!!! Rain/snow had stopped and the sun was coming out again :)

Did I mention the bus journey was about 10 minutes long... Luckily enough the whole time we were walking and taking photos it was nice and sunny :) then when we finally made it back to Princes street and the shops it started raining again. An obvious sign that I should go shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay :) When I was done, the rain had stopped again for us to go check how big is the queue to the big Wheel and make our way to Mary King's Close.

How lucky were we? :)

Despite of Mr. Special claiming that "No one knows about Mary Kings Close, so it won't be busy and you can't book online blah blah blah", it turned out that all the tours that day were sold out (booked) and booking for the next day was extremely suggested. And guess what? You could book online :)

Car curse

Why is it that every time we make a plan of going somewhere by car (I don't mean little journeys to the shop to get food etc) the \|\!@##$%$% car has something wrong with it so that we have to take the @#$%%%%%%^$#@ train... It never plans out right. I don't mind going by train, I really don't but every time we had to change plans last minute the train journey has been also either extremely expensive and\or stressful. I think it's time to sell that stupid car ( which was bought just for the summer trip - that didn't happen as planned) and get another one, because how many times can one car break down or simply have other problems that mean it can't be (legally) driven, just before a longer journey. It's like it's doing it on purpose, because there was nothing wrong with it sept-dec.

A little (a looong one actually) recap of the things that have happened - the recent one is the WORST

Initially we were supposed to get from Corsica to Paris by car and tour everything in between and have daytrips all summer. Didn't happen coz some stupid registration document didn't arrive on time and if you get caught driving without it in France, the car would be confiscated and you'll get a fine... So instead we paid more than 200 euros for freaking trains (last minute you see) and almost died trying to carry all my stuff. In Toulon Mr. Special had a serious meltdown... The hill in Paris from the metro station to our flat didn't help either.

Then Mr. Special offered to go Christmas shopping to Chester. The night before that the car was vandalised: passenger wingmirror kicked off, the back wiper pulled off... the missing wiper made the car not road worthy and if caught he could've faced fines and got points on his licence...

To add pain to injury, the next day he was supposed to drop me off in London for me to catch my flight home... We took the train.. 98 quid one way... Where do you get these prices from????? The car journey would've been half as much as that!!! Seriously, and then everyone promotes public transport! What makes up that ridiculous price??????????

Should I even mention that in an ideal world, we were supposed to drive up to Edinburgh for Hogmanay. But obviously the day before my return to the UK, it started snowing in North-Wales, where Mr. Special spent his Christmas... And with no special winter tyres driving on ice is a crash waiting to happen. And it did. A minor one luckily: Mr. Special is alright, but the car needed repairs (again!). So he rushed it to his mate and there was hope we could get it back on the road the next day :)

Meanwhile I bought a train ticket from Stansted to Chester. 40 minutes after my flight was scheduled... I thought it's a small airport, there's no way Ryanair will actually fly 3 hours as it had stated and felt quite comfortable doing that... The first panick moment came when it was 5 minutes to our scheduled departure and there was no plane to be seen... Normally they are always on time but this time when I really need it (I don't want to pay another 100 quid for a train ticket) they are freaking half an hour late!!!!!!!! I got lucky though, sitting in fourth row, I was one of the first ones out :) Hovered around for 30 seconds or so to wait for Emma, who was at the back of the plane. We'd made a deal to meet up and struggle finding the train station and getting our tickets from the machine together :) But there was no staircase to the back of the plane in sight... I looked before I ran off :D In one of the corridors there was a HUGE queue. I thought this is it, not gonna makee my train coz I can't even see the border control yet... Turned out it was a queue to get up the escalator :D And now I remembered Stansted airport and realised my huge mistake in just leaving 40 minutes to get from the plane to the train.... That is the biggest crowd I've ever seen in passport control history... Luckily the electronic gates for special passports worked this time and that queue wasn't long at all. I had prepared my ID card and so in search of my passport let a couple of people in front of me :) Finally at the gate (2 mins later? after looking to see if I can spot Emma anywhere) I waas through the gate which seemed to be taking forever... Did it take photos of me????????? I think by that time I had about 5 minutes left before my train went... Still looking back to see Emma, I half rushed (part of me had given up) to the train station, where I got my tickets (2 minutes left!!!!) and look for my train... The board didn't have it anymore - I blame that but I saw people running to a train that was according to the board about to leave in half an hour. Obvs my train. So I ran... Just as I was about to push the button to open the doors, the light went off!!!!! @$#@$@##@@ Noticed one door was still open, ran to that as it was closing, got my foot in the middl of them to try to make them open again and they #$@#$#@% wouldn't. Literally if I hadn't taken my foot away would I been dragged with the train???????? They shouldn't close if something's trying to stop them! RIGHT?!?!?!

The fact that if I had just simply dashed from the plane to the train I would've made it with ease, made me so furious. At myself obvs. I would've had at least an extra minute if I haven't had stopped to wait for Emma, if I haven't had let people in front of me in the passport queue, if I had pushed forward in the escalator queue like one smelly old lady did (imagine sitting next to her in the plane), if I had actually ran from the passport control to the train station - I would have made it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The next train was due 15 minutes later. Only fifteen minutes, I kept telling myself, I'll make it up in the tube, I will!!!!!!! On the train Emma now texted me saying she got through the passport control 40 minutes after me!!!! Long story short, I got to my main train with three minutes to spare and this time I ran (as much as you can with a suitcase) from the tube stop to my train, even bypassed people on the escalators... Some old lady sat in my window seat... So I sat next to her and watched her sleep all the way leaning on the window... like I wanted to do...

Now back to the car curse :D We were hoping to get the fixed car back so we can drive it up to Edinburgh but obvs it once again started snowing in North Wales and the repairman couldn't get the missing part, it was there, it was ready to be fixed (probs a 5 min job), but he thought it too risky to drive with the snow... fair enough. So we got a train... you don't even want to know how much it was... a ridiculous amount... We had one change in Warrington where Mr. Special jinxed everything: This isn't a bad journey is it? Oh you've seen nothing yet. Luckily we got ourselves positioned right where the standard class carriages arrived and soon noted a slight problem... the train was full... So we squeezed in and stood by the door for the whole duration of the journey... about 4 hours? More? who knows. And since the train was heavily overcrowded it didn't go as fast as it should've so we were late as well... We were the 'lucky' ones though... loads of people were left behind in Warrington and Carslile. In Preston? even the train manager had difficulty getting on, so she phoned up all the stations to say no more people to be let on etc (but how can you stop people from getting on the train??? 9 carriages).

Some people had the cheek to complain that the shop isn't open (coz there were too many people standing in there) and they are hungry etc. You have a SEAT, go sit in your seat and be quiet!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you serious???? You see tens and tens of people standing up and you start whining in front of us that you can't get a coffee!!!!!!!?????

So yeah... I think that car needs to be sold and another one without a curse on it bought...

Homie

It started snowing yesterday!!!! :) SO it'll be a white christmas :) Oh I love it so much!

Anyway this will be a chit-chat post about everything I have to say (I thought about it yesterday when falling asleep :D) because I don't really have one subject to talk about but lots to say ;)

So lets get starteeeeeed!

  1. You probably might guess that I'm home now :) It feels weird... I should've come back closer to Christmas :D I tremendously like being home during summer, but winter time, there's really nothing to do coz it's sooooo cold and I obvs don't even have any proper clothes to deal with it anymore :D
  2. Today I wrapped all the Christmas presents :) All the others (and me previously) are lazy and just use the bags, but it feels so much cooler to wrap them up properly and then tear it all apart... mwahhaahahahaa. I seem to have more presents than ever this year although for the first time we (the adults) decided to do secret santa instead of getting everyone a present :D
  3. Got finally around to updating my CV, although it's still not done because I couldn't remember the name of the organisation I worked for in Paris :D :D Yes, that is indeed a sign of old age ;) And it just needs a little oomph added to it to make it pop, but I don't know what how why when :D So I'm pushing the actual applying process forward... I've favourited some jobs ads though - still in date yeaaaaaah :D
  4. Another thing I've pushed to the sidelines is... my essay... I just can't do anything here!!! So I'll probably die of stress at the beginning of January coz me so stupido.
  5. That brings to mind we got our comment paper grade and I got a freaking FIRST!!! OMG I'm so happy!!!!! now all I have to do is nail that exam as well (2 days after the essay :() and it could be happy days!!!!!!!!!!!! so excited :)
  6. In other news the new timetable came out on Monday, a three hour lecture.... wow, must be a first for Aber? :D It can still change a bit, but looks like now thursday (4-6 french) is my proper uni day that includes going from one campus to the other, which I didn't really have to do last semester (I had a huge gap, where I went home).
  7. There was probably something else I thought about writing to you last night but hey ho! never mind - I might add it later :D ooooh mystery and excitement!

Merry Christmas!!!! :)

Last minute man

Do you remember my post about who busy busy this semester will be and what assignments I have to do etc. well... I did have much more to do than the first two year but the thing is, I did them all in the last two weeks :D :D :D :D :D :D I just can't start doing something reasonably early, no wait, I can start and figure out what I want to do: do some reading etc, and then think wow this is easy, no worries now, just a matter of writing it up. And then I procrastinate until the last minute comes and wooops turns out it isn't "that easy" after all :D no shit sherlock.

That's how I wrote my comment paper: read the articles more than a month ago, didn't find anything, hated this whole stupid subject, then a week ago (look how good I am :) ) took it up again - I had compiled all the interesting articles together and even made some notes on some and voila! the first one I (re)opened happened to be the one I was like hmmm... I can work with this :) So as I'd now found my article (the hardest part), I let it be for a couple more days and started writing it up a day earlier (I had a French presentation to do as well for the same day), needless to say I ran into some difficulty and even now, after submitting it, I'm not happy with it at all... thinking I could've added a lot more "smart" discussion etc... but we shall see...

The french presentation didn't go too well :D I only had an hour for that (in between lectures) and it wasn't too bad but compared to the others, who'd done massive research on their essay topic, I had just oooh I want to do this, I'll consider this and contrast between them, and I'll look at these texts (A couple minutes too short :( ). Others told the history of their text's authors etc etc etc, I felt really shit sitting their waiting for my turn, and after as well :D Now I have to actually start reading the texts and find the interesting parts I need for my essay. And write it! BUT the shock of the semester: we can write that essay in English (or French, your choice!!!!) WHAT????!!! My jaw literally dropped when he told us that last class :D

Anyway this semester is now pretty much over, although I still have stuff to do - my French essay, should start applying for graduate jobs (to my surprise most of those deadlines are in December/January!!!!), and collect data for my dissertation + revise for my exam in January.

Good news too :) Got 7's for my article presentations - I thought the first one had gone horribly because I literally choked and couldn't make up proper phrases: started saying something and ended with... yeah... ok... and moved on :D :D :D :D I was soooooo embarrased, I don't usually get so nervous during presentations, but luckily I had said smart stuff :D

Sleeping

I am really good in bed - I can sleep for days ;)

No seriously, on Monday I went to bed at 7PM and woke up in time to go to lecture the next morning. I just do not understand people who can get up early in the morning because they can't sleep anymore! What do you mena you can't sleep anymore! Go to bed close your eyes, daydream and voila you open your eyes like 4 hours later :D Easy-peasy.

Thanks to Mr. Special I now wake up relatively early too, and do you know how good it feels :) The day is sooooo much longer when you wake up at 9AM instead of 11AM. I've always admired and been jealous of morning people. Even if I wake up, I can't get out of bed and just lie there for a couple more hours usually :D Pretty useless waste of time... One day when I had two french presentations that I hadn't really prepared for I set my alarm for half six in the morning to revise. The first lecture was at 10. I was awake for most of the time after my alarm but just stayed in bed :D :D :D :D

The other thing I don't understand is people who pull all-nighters. You are up ALL night and write your essay???? ALL NIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?! The closest I've come to that is in my second year when I started my essay at 5PM to hand it in at 11AM the next morning. Oh believe me I had sleeping breaks :D Like three-four hours at a time, meaning I wrote until I was tired, set my alarm to wake up three hours later and continue writing a bit (an hour maybe) and then go back to sleep for another couple of hours. (I got a first for that essay so I'm really proud actually :D).

The other day when I had a 9 AM lecture I woke up at 9.06!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! Sleeping in is not something I do! I'm usually very careful with my alarms and when I think I haven't set the alarm I can't either sleep or wake up 5 mins before the alarm just to be sure. So when I opened my eyes and the clock said 9.06 I was in shock! Somehow I'd forgotten to set the alarm (I have it set for every day automatically so I wouldn't forget) cause last week I'd woken up earlier (set another earlier alarm and turned the normal one off) to finish my literature review :D

Hey at lest I don't sleep in lectures :D We have one girl in tourism who sleeps in lectures quite often and then in French one girl fell asleep too (after my presentation lol :D - the teacher had been talking for a good while already though!). And she even took a deep loud breath :D I noticed because the lecturer noticed (he didn't say anything though) :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

This is the third time I'm updating this but I forgot that I wanted to include some of my dreams too - I can only remember on at the moment so I might do a fourth update when I remember the other one - I know I had two!!!! Anyway the second one was that the flat above mine was being renovated and I wasn't allowed to go there to look, but I did and then threw an anchor out of their window. My Welsh friend saw that and panicked and we went back to retrieve the anchor. But on our way up we heard someone in that flat. It was tadadaaaa Kanye West :D :D :D  He was decorating the flat above mine :) As soon as he heard something on the stairs he started shouting and raced towards us - we obviously ran to my flat and closed the door. (That's it :D)
