Everyone always says think outside the box to be unique and creative. Now that's been taken to another level and been developed into a mindset: in this moment of time are you in or outside the box?
In order to truly know this you are required to reflect on yourself and current mood. In the moment can you describe your mood with mainly positive or negative adjectives? In a very simplified way this is giving you the answer: in the box you feel trapped, scared, can't see or hear anything (rage for example when you are blindly focused only on one thing) etc; and out the box you are purposeful, focused (can see and hear and take into account all sides) and responsive.
Who cares? Well this is good for getting to know yourself as there are always two ways to respond to the situation. Both may get you the result but just in a different way. Neither is absolutely right or wrong but it's your attitude that chooses if you're in or out the box :) Knowing this might stop you from cracking under pressure (most of the time stress is just made up in our head - it's not really a life or death situation) and being more effective, it might stop you blindly shouting at someone for not turning up for work etc. before even giving them the chance to explain.
Mind you this doesn't mean that being in the box is always 100% bad thing and you have to avoid it at all costs. We tend to go in and out all the time without even realizing it ourselves. This term is only meant to make you think: Am I in a good frame of mind to undertake this activity/ make this decision etc.
I learnt about this on a two day management course and at first I was totally in the box: new situation, having to talk about my feelings and what stresses me out at work in front of a group of strangers... Wayyyy out of my comfort zone and I normally shut down and talk as little as possible. But by the end of the second day I was starting to embrace it, shouted out my thoughts too and after the feedback round I left with a huge smile on my face and felt really light and relieved. I survived :) And I do hope to not forget this and use it once in a while :)
So what puts me in the box at work
- Freaking polish woman not getting all her jobs done and then blaming the cashier and others for not helping etc. The one that broke me was when she said the morning staff should work the backup milk before the delivery. Company policy says I only have 15 minutes to put everything in the fridge so do you really think I have the time to start doing your job too? When you work the milk last thing at night we won't be having the problem of newer stock out while older stock is in the back. Your freaking job!!!!!! So I explained nicely :) a week went by and another note about it: Can you tell morning staff to.... NO!
- That same woman wants to go into management but dude! you can't even perform supervisory duties perfectly. And it's not like she can't as such but she won't or I don't even know why. Because she always says yes I want to improve etc. But at the same time she has a bad attitude and tries to get away with doing as little as possible. I don't know, it's hard to explain but it does my head in.
- Then we have this other guy who is officially number three now (oooh yeah fancy rankings we've got) and he's the opposite of the Polish woman. He tries and tries so hard but he just fails. At tidying up mainly. He does work all the stock perfectly but the back is always in a stupid mess. Like why??? Just stack things a bit better please! It's not that hard. You can see when it's messy and when not. The Pole even made a sly comment: "Did you enjoy the messy backroom he left". F you at least he can work stock! Yes I hate people.
- And what put me in a box today: I freaking counted the beers yesterday and somehow managed to forget to put it through making my work pointless and someone else having to recount them quickly... FUUUUUDGE. It's a stupid stupid mistake, but like why????? What is wrong with me? I actually was very proud of getting everything done yesterday :D
Fun times :)
Ttyl ;)
Jazzz...
