Playlist

5 New songs coming up :)

Maybe I should listen to her whole new album since I am absolutely loving the first two singles :) Taylor Swift - Blank Space

Ella Henderson - Glow

I haven't listened to them for a while now and was even a little surprised that this song is theirs :D

One direction - Night changes

Lorde - Yellow flicker beat

The Estonian one is my favourite from a tv show where singers sing and change each other's songs

Eda Ines Etti - Mulle meeldib see

Homie

It started snowing yesterday!!!! :) SO it'll be a white christmas :) Oh I love it so much!

Anyway this will be a chit-chat post about everything I have to say (I thought about it yesterday when falling asleep :D) because I don't really have one subject to talk about but lots to say ;)

So lets get starteeeeeed!

  1. You probably might guess that I'm home now :) It feels weird... I should've come back closer to Christmas :D I tremendously like being home during summer, but winter time, there's really nothing to do coz it's sooooo cold and I obvs don't even have any proper clothes to deal with it anymore :D
  2. Today I wrapped all the Christmas presents :) All the others (and me previously) are lazy and just use the bags, but it feels so much cooler to wrap them up properly and then tear it all apart... mwahhaahahahaa. I seem to have more presents than ever this year although for the first time we (the adults) decided to do secret santa instead of getting everyone a present :D
  3. Got finally around to updating my CV, although it's still not done because I couldn't remember the name of the organisation I worked for in Paris :D :D Yes, that is indeed a sign of old age ;) And it just needs a little oomph added to it to make it pop, but I don't know what how why when :D So I'm pushing the actual applying process forward... I've favourited some jobs ads though - still in date yeaaaaaah :D
  4. Another thing I've pushed to the sidelines is... my essay... I just can't do anything here!!! So I'll probably die of stress at the beginning of January coz me so stupido.
  5. That brings to mind we got our comment paper grade and I got a freaking FIRST!!! OMG I'm so happy!!!!! now all I have to do is nail that exam as well (2 days after the essay :() and it could be happy days!!!!!!!!!!!! so excited :)
  6. In other news the new timetable came out on Monday, a three hour lecture.... wow, must be a first for Aber? :D It can still change a bit, but looks like now thursday (4-6 french) is my proper uni day that includes going from one campus to the other, which I didn't really have to do last semester (I had a huge gap, where I went home).
  7. There was probably something else I thought about writing to you last night but hey ho! never mind - I might add it later :D ooooh mystery and excitement!

Merry Christmas!!!! :)

Last minute man

Do you remember my post about who busy busy this semester will be and what assignments I have to do etc. well... I did have much more to do than the first two year but the thing is, I did them all in the last two weeks :D :D :D :D :D :D I just can't start doing something reasonably early, no wait, I can start and figure out what I want to do: do some reading etc, and then think wow this is easy, no worries now, just a matter of writing it up. And then I procrastinate until the last minute comes and wooops turns out it isn't "that easy" after all :D no shit sherlock.

That's how I wrote my comment paper: read the articles more than a month ago, didn't find anything, hated this whole stupid subject, then a week ago (look how good I am :) ) took it up again - I had compiled all the interesting articles together and even made some notes on some and voila! the first one I (re)opened happened to be the one I was like hmmm... I can work with this :) So as I'd now found my article (the hardest part), I let it be for a couple more days and started writing it up a day earlier (I had a French presentation to do as well for the same day), needless to say I ran into some difficulty and even now, after submitting it, I'm not happy with it at all... thinking I could've added a lot more "smart" discussion etc... but we shall see...

The french presentation didn't go too well :D I only had an hour for that (in between lectures) and it wasn't too bad but compared to the others, who'd done massive research on their essay topic, I had just oooh I want to do this, I'll consider this and contrast between them, and I'll look at these texts (A couple minutes too short :( ). Others told the history of their text's authors etc etc etc, I felt really shit sitting their waiting for my turn, and after as well :D Now I have to actually start reading the texts and find the interesting parts I need for my essay. And write it! BUT the shock of the semester: we can write that essay in English (or French, your choice!!!!) WHAT????!!! My jaw literally dropped when he told us that last class :D

Anyway this semester is now pretty much over, although I still have stuff to do - my French essay, should start applying for graduate jobs (to my surprise most of those deadlines are in December/January!!!!), and collect data for my dissertation + revise for my exam in January.

Good news too :) Got 7's for my article presentations - I thought the first one had gone horribly because I literally choked and couldn't make up proper phrases: started saying something and ended with... yeah... ok... and moved on :D :D :D :D I was soooooo embarrased, I don't usually get so nervous during presentations, but luckily I had said smart stuff :D

Sleeping

I am really good in bed - I can sleep for days ;)

No seriously, on Monday I went to bed at 7PM and woke up in time to go to lecture the next morning. I just do not understand people who can get up early in the morning because they can't sleep anymore! What do you mena you can't sleep anymore! Go to bed close your eyes, daydream and voila you open your eyes like 4 hours later :D Easy-peasy.

Thanks to Mr. Special I now wake up relatively early too, and do you know how good it feels :) The day is sooooo much longer when you wake up at 9AM instead of 11AM. I've always admired and been jealous of morning people. Even if I wake up, I can't get out of bed and just lie there for a couple more hours usually :D Pretty useless waste of time... One day when I had two french presentations that I hadn't really prepared for I set my alarm for half six in the morning to revise. The first lecture was at 10. I was awake for most of the time after my alarm but just stayed in bed :D :D :D :D

The other thing I don't understand is people who pull all-nighters. You are up ALL night and write your essay???? ALL NIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?! The closest I've come to that is in my second year when I started my essay at 5PM to hand it in at 11AM the next morning. Oh believe me I had sleeping breaks :D Like three-four hours at a time, meaning I wrote until I was tired, set my alarm to wake up three hours later and continue writing a bit (an hour maybe) and then go back to sleep for another couple of hours. (I got a first for that essay so I'm really proud actually :D).

The other day when I had a 9 AM lecture I woke up at 9.06!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! Sleeping in is not something I do! I'm usually very careful with my alarms and when I think I haven't set the alarm I can't either sleep or wake up 5 mins before the alarm just to be sure. So when I opened my eyes and the clock said 9.06 I was in shock! Somehow I'd forgotten to set the alarm (I have it set for every day automatically so I wouldn't forget) cause last week I'd woken up earlier (set another earlier alarm and turned the normal one off) to finish my literature review :D

Hey at lest I don't sleep in lectures :D We have one girl in tourism who sleeps in lectures quite often and then in French one girl fell asleep too (after my presentation lol :D - the teacher had been talking for a good while already though!). And she even took a deep loud breath :D I noticed because the lecturer noticed (he didn't say anything though) :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

This is the third time I'm updating this but I forgot that I wanted to include some of my dreams too - I can only remember on at the moment so I might do a fourth update when I remember the other one - I know I had two!!!! Anyway the second one was that the flat above mine was being renovated and I wasn't allowed to go there to look, but I did and then threw an anchor out of their window. My Welsh friend saw that and panicked and we went back to retrieve the anchor. But on our way up we heard someone in that flat. It was tadadaaaa Kanye West :D :D :D  He was decorating the flat above mine :) As soon as he heard something on the stairs he started shouting and raced towards us - we obviously ran to my flat and closed the door. (That's it :D)

Reading week

First time I've actually done some reading in reading week :D Though not as much as I hoped :D
Before reading week started I wrote out all my deadlines for this semester: 9 different things to present or write etc. and thought that I'd spend one day on each of them... well since the literature review for my dissertation was the first deadline I actually spent the entire reading week on it... Did nothing on Monday, then read two hours of articles on Tuesday, Wednesday (I just can't anymore after two hours I get restless and need to do something else) somehow I've managed to copy 30 pages of interesting info from those articles and so Thursday I wrote up my lit review (I'm still not a 100% sure on what I am doing it on - but my supervisor said it's okidoki, no need to worry or stress about it too much just yet (we get marked every meeting though on our progress which then makes up 10% of the final dissertation mark)).

Then on Friday I realised (I realised it on Monday already tbh) that I hadn't done anything else yet... So for the next weeks it's gonna get tough and I can't wait it to be over yet... :D So next on the list are three french presentations, a 2000 word essay in French, not to mention the usual (translation work and writing exercise), 2 article presentations, 1 article comment (just like in real journals whippyyy) and last but not least: the methodology chapter for my dissertation.

Did I mention there's less than a month left????

PS! I still have plenty of time to lull around doing nothing, playing candy crush and farm heroes all day ;) obvs

Cat lover

I am a cat person, no doubt about it (like my kitty calendar said one day - all cats are beautiful, even the ugly ones). We've always had cats, either in the house or moving into the garage because my nan started feeding it there and she decided to stay and now (6 years later?) she even comes and tries to sit on my lap when I'm outside. At one point we had about 10 cats in the country house :D :D At the moment we have a black cat and since we let her out to roam as she wishes she often crosses the street (see where I'm going?) and once I saw a car come to a full stop and reverse back they way it had come just because my awesome Lily wanted to go and say hello to the neighbours :D The first summer she was let out she only came in the room to eat and when outside no one could even go near her, she started hissing immediately! When the winter came and it became cold she had to come back inside :D HA! and ever since became a normal cat whom you can pet and who likes to curl up in your lap :) Now she's so happy to see me (twice a year) that the first day she realises I'm home she follows me around or I have to carry her around and she's perfectly happy on my arms (like a baby) when I'm moving around and doing my stuff :) true love :)

i actually came here to talk about the pets we got now :) Fishies!!!!!!!! Tbh I wasn't too impressed... stupid fish, what use are they????????? And who knew it's such a hassle to get a couple. We bought a 30 litre tank and you can only get one gold fish in it! Wot the point?!?!?!?!?! So instead we got some other little orange fishies (6 of them now). First you have to let the water be in the tank for three days then you can get two fish and after a week another two and so on... Such hassle!!!!!!!!!! Then two fishies died :( Mr. Special overfed!!!! now it's my job :P none have died after that. Then one of our fishies was supposed to be pregnant - oooh exciting times - but like 5 weeks later there are still no babies... so the stupid shop either lied to us or something happened (like other fish ate the babies!!! Freaking cannibals). And omg they poop so much!!!!! Jesus!!! Literally every time I look what they're doing (quite relaxing actually) at least one of them has poop stuck to its bottom -.- The pregnant one did nothing but poop for the first couple of days...

Then for one weekend we got to babysit a dog... dogsit??? One of Mr. Special's friend's dog.... a big dog that hasn't got basically any training whatsoever. So he was jumping on us all the time and running around and was so excited... argh, luckily I was working every night :D :D :D :D I regretted taking him from the first 5 seconds but when he was gone I kind of miss him now :D Oh and the cage!!!!! Isn't that cruel keeping dogs in cages when you don't want to play with them or want them out of the way or whatever?????? freaking train dogs so they wouldn't misbehave instead of locking them up!

I wish I was allowed to take a cat!

Open Day

Ever since I came here and learned that the uni recruits student ambassadors either to help freshers settle in or attract newbie students to join us next year, I've wanted to be a part of that. So every year I've looked at the application form - even downloaded it - but never got around to actually filling it in... Same this year. Until an e-mail came through asking specifically for students who had been away for a year - either doing a year in employment scheme or Erasmus etc. It was my time to shine!!!!!!!

So a couple of weeks ago I put the yellow ambassador's shirt on and started answering questions that the potential students and their parents had. Unfortunately for me, after my year in France I kind of lose my ability to speak English in stressful situations... So I was cussing at myself for struggling to find words and form easy sentences and fighting the urge to tell the parents that I promise I can actually speak English, just today I'm a bit weird ok??? Please don't judge me :D The questions they asked wasn't very easy either tbh: for example how is the teaching of marketing structured in this institution? Ummmm... welll... uh... what? (I gave a slightly better answer to them but still.... jesus I've never thought of it like that). Then luckily someone did want to know about the language year abroad :) happy days :) hopefully they were satisfied with my answers... :D

It was a good experience and I'd definitely do it again if given the chance but I felt so much under pressure to give the "right" answers, whatever they might be, and afraid of saying something stupid :D Other good parts during the day were free sandwiches and coffee :) and I actually learned something new as well about my course and how they present it.

Halloween

I've never ever ever celebrated halloween, simply because I do not like to dress up in costumes. Mainly because I don't have any ideas for costumes. Well.. because I don't want to go and buy something that I'll only wear a couple of nights a year... If I had something cool to wear I would probably love halloween :D

This year I decided to carve a pumpkin... Mr. Special bought the first pumpkin about a week ago and finally got so fed up with my inactivity and interest in it that he carved it all by himself one day I was in lectures :D He decided to carve a haunted house It was awesome! - määäääääää I wanted to do one tooo :D So a couple of days later he went to the shop to buy another (not as big as his) pumpkin. That one stood there for a couple of days - it takes me a lot of time getting around to doing things when finally I saw an inspirational photo of someone else's carved pumpkin and I decided to do mine the same way :) (obviously it didn't come out as good as the on in the photo duh but I am so proud of myself :))

I do admit I did get a little bored while doing the stitches to the mouth :D But I got it done and so I took hundreds of photos, then realized I have fake spider rings, put them on the pumpkins, took another hundred photos, then realized we bought an awesome branch light (or whatever it's called), put the pumpkins in front of it and took another hundred photos ;)

I think this is the best one :

Monthly music

To be honest this time I am struggling to find 5 music videos :( Bc I really haven't had time to discover anything new and exciting. But come to think of it... There are some songs that have caught my ear ;)

Taylor Swift - Shake it Off

Meghan Trainor - All about that Bass

Enrique Iglesias  - Bailando

The first three songs are lighthearted party songs :) Atleast my foot wants to tap along and hip is starting to move involuntarily when I listen to them :)

But the fourth one is different :)

Hozier - Take me to Church

Estonian selection:
the one I tried to put up last time :D

Sidenote: This was easier than I thought :) I envisaged having to put up more Bastille covers :D ;) - I do still listen to them and found out that they've done a second album as well - but I find it to be too trance or dance or club style for my liking...

Back to work

If for some reason you might think that uni is all I have to deal with (pfft the hell is she whining about? It doesn't look like too much work at all...)(It has gotten better actually - I can now chill for a bit without freaking out in my head about the work I have to do) then I'm here to tell you I got my old job back :) And some customers even remember me!!!!! AAAwwwyeaaaah. :)

At first I got a 12 hour contract  (wait wait wait... I haven't actually signed anything... :D ) and was a bit sad, but then when all the uni work came in I was glad to only have to go to work two nights a week :)

It's weird being back - I don't know where any of the stock is (all the planograms have changed), paypoint is now done through the till. AND no one actually gave me any training :D so whenever someone comes in with a little problem that I haven't dealt with yet (this year) I have to call someone to show what button to press (it's always sooo easy and I feel ashamed) :D

Ps! This weekend I'm working Friday, Saturday AND Sunday night, and having to lock up. No ones actually shown me how to do that (I know pretty much everything but there's always a but). So I'll be freaking out like a madman running around hoping everything got swithed off or on and all the signs are in the shop etc etc etc. Wish me luck! :)

Whiny

All I seem to do is whine whine whine for the past two weeks... Like I told my tutor: the first two weeks of this year have been busier than the first two years. And I'm tired now... :D A friend of mine is thinking of moving to Edinburgh and asked me to go with her, but she's moving in a month or so... I said I was thinking of quitting the uni anyway so why the hell not! :D

So what have I done: finally decided on my dissertation topic - although it needs proper phrasing and aims need to be written out, it should've been done this week but one good point about my diss supervisor is that he isn't that fussy about things like that (or he secretly hates my idea and just doesn't want to tell me that). He's the kind of slow, whatever will be will be type of guy so I'm a bit torn if I want him to be my supervisor or not :D The first meeting went ok, told him about my ideas, he said it sounds interesting but we shall see how you get on about doing it in practice. He gave me some ideas about research methods and some further literature to read. So not too bad :) We'll meet again in three weeks when I must have done my literature review already!!!! When I listen to some other students with slightly stricter supervisor (they've met 3 times already) I'm glad I chose the yeah... well... okay... kind of supervisor : slow and steady wins the race :)

I've found tons of articles for my lit review though so yay :) + Mr. Special is always sending me further links and god knows what else about it too.... Could someone now please read through all of them and give me a brief summary? Please?!? I just read the title, sometimes even the abstract and  make a note of it for later reading................

17th century travel literature module is a pain in the ##### as well, for every lecture we have a text to read, last time we had about a 12 page text to read between the four of us (group work) now for this week we have a whole freaking book to read on our own to pick out the parts where you can see that the writer is a huguenot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did I mention that the book is freaking scanned in and originally published in the 17th century - not some modern book????? In french???? In 17th century French!!!! Otherwise the lecture is interesting but I am dreading my presentation and then later my essay - gave him my topic and he asked me to start reading about it now!!! How???? Where?????? How does he even find these kinds of texts??????? I don't even know where to start!!!!!

In French oral classes we always have freaking 5 different articles to read. I didn't say a word in last class bc I have nothing to say on the subject - well I do I could've said that Estonia just passed the civil union law, but I was just too tired to even try to understand anything that was happening in the class... Yay my mark is going to be excellent for that class -.-

Do you see why the offer to move to Edinburgh seems so tempting?

A proper Uni??

It looks like thanks to the bad rankings in the last couple of years Aber is trying to become a better uni. Which means a lot of work for me... At least it sounds interesting ;) My timetable is fuller than ever... and I have lots of journals to read, conduct research in English and in French plus do all the little French homeworks... sounds fun... and exhausting.

Anyway this semester my timetable looks like this:
Monday
  • Oral class at 10, for which we have loads of articles to read... like freaking 7 at a time and they're not small news nippets oh no, full on articles... And in the first class I opened my mouth totally voluntarily :) Talked about the strikes in Corsica. The second class I finally spoke as well, the teacher was already like oh gosh yes thank god I didn't have to ask you :P We get a mark each lesson and obvs if you don't say anything you get a zero...
  • French travel literature at 12, the hardest of the two optional modules. The one with a 2000 word essay. the on with 2 10-minute presentations about some book (17-19.th century). The one which for every class you have to critically analyse a text and then we discuss it in class. The one where I haven't yet said a word in... Participation is being assessed... crap...
  • Translation at 4, which seems really really hard this year but luckily there were a couple of others in my group who didn't know how to translate the text either, so I'm not the only stupido :)
Tuesday
  • Listening at 10 every other week :) Pretty much the same as previous years.
  • Sustainable Tourism at 4 for 2 hours in the other campus. I expect to be fit after this year ;)
Wednesday
  • Freedom!!!! a couple of field visits with the tourism lecture are on Wednesday.
Thursday
  • 9AM other campus, dissertation module, please kill me now! Turns out this year we get to choose our own supervisors depending on the subject we do our diss on. And they made a video introducing themselves :D The first deadline by which you have to practically know everything is in a week already and by now some of the supervisors have filled their student quota... What do I do?????????
  • Grammar at 3, in the first class she already gave us conjugations to do... fail... hard... and she explained the enormous amount of homework as well... yippiiii
Friday
  • Tourism seminar at 9 in which we each have to
  1. Review a journal article
  2. Critically discuss another article
  3. Judge the reviews and discussions of two other students
What have I gotten myself into?

Induction week

Back in Aber!!!!

I must say I wasn't too impressed having to come back here... the first couple of days I was even depressed :D but after the first induction meetings were held I realized that Aber might be on the verge of becoming a proper uni :)

I was so against coming back because I heard horror stories how about a hundred students last year got the same supervisor for their dissertations and my overall dislikeness to how we don't really have interesting subjects or even a choice on what to do. Having been to 5 different lectures a day in Corsica, I wasn't keen on going to 5 different lectures period...

My timetable looks a bit more full this year though :) Which is good :) The bad thing this year is that we can't choose language groups!!!!!! Why why why? That means I have huge caps between lectures at some days :S I'll tell you all about it in the next post dedicated to my timetable :D

What else is new and good here? Well we seem to have a compulsory employability program forced upon us. At first I was vary in going to the meetings and problem solving workshop. Bleh me, I like to sit in the corner, do nothing and be invisible and still succeed in life! But I went and even got inspired :) The point of this is to help us all get jobs after uni :) Why fight it? Better to do all the assessment centre activities first in a non-judgmental atmosphere :) And have let some professional have a look through my cv and covering letter and give me tips on it :) And what other activities they come up with.

The week turned out to be even better after the departmental welcoming where they admitted having problems last year and said that this year ALL the academic staff will be supervisors and we get to choose our own, depending on the subject we do it on :) What could be better than that? Plus every time we have a meeting with them they have to fill in a form on how we are doing and what to do next etc.

And looks like the new tourism people are much much much nicer than our old grumpy group who didn't really want anything to do with us foreigners :) Plus there are so much more of them too :)

I am even looking forward to this year :) And now on to writing my PDP - my progression in French about my last year...

A couple of hoarders???

Who kew that I have soooooooo much stuff? I sure didn't. Seriously I think I have a problem. managed to fit all my clothes finally in the wardrobe and then went to pick up a huge box with more clothes in it :S And the sad part is that I don't wear even half of them... but I can't give them away either because what IF I need them???? Oh god I have to man up don't I? Because believe me it is getting ridiculous.

The other thing we have lots and everywhere is souvenirs... As you might have noticed we did a lot of travelling last year and every time got a little something. Now is the first time I see the little somethings all together in our flat... EVERYWHERE. It's like tourism came and threw up... There are photos and post cards on every wall, little figurines and whatever on every surface, not to mention different mugs and glasses fitted between them... I would love to put at least half of them in a drawer somewhere and then take them out later on putting other stuff in the drawers. A nice rotation :) But how on earth am I supposed to choose which ones to leave out and where???

Mr. Special with his endless dvd and vcr (who watches them anymore) isn't helping either! And I'm not even going to mention the thousand books we have... (actually I could give some of the crappy ones away... just joking I only have 2-3 crappy books that my heart will let me give away). Should I call a tv-show to come and help me?

Homebound for 2 weeks

Every time I go home the stay keeps getting better :) It is harder and harder to leave each time... :( The first year I was pretty much content with just one week, now 2 weeks is not enough by far. And what did I do then? Well nothing much to be honest :) Chilled at home, went to the zoo: we were lucky to see the polar bear and leopard cubs and the famous Zoo man in Estonia happened to walk by while we were there and he stopped to tell his wise tales next to us :):):):) The best part about it was when he told the momma bear to leave the cub alone and she did! WOW! :D

As always I "woke up" near the end of my stay and started contacting everyone then :D The first week I don't think I even left the house :D I just watched "The vacation in Mexico" which is something like the Jersey Shore but a Russian twist on it. And then the Russian psychic challenge. I wonder where I could watch them with subtitles?

My brothers are sooo cute and that's the hardest part of being away :( They grow up soooo fast! H went to school now and C is just soooo cute and wants to cuddle all the time. The last morning he came to my bed after waking up just to chill and talk :) Dad took me out to a pub - probs the most we've spoken to each other in a couple of years :)

That's about it... Needless to say I am not especially looking forward to returning Aber :D

Venice

I've been to Venice!!! Ou yeah :) To be honest for some reason it's different in real life than in my imagination :S Yes, there are canals, yes, there are bridges, yes, there are narrow streets. But for some reason I had thought that you could walk along the canals more than you actually can... And every house needs a new fresh layer of paint. Otherwise it was pretty perfect :)

It didn't smell as some people say :) Or maybe we were just lucky. It wasn't awfully expensive. But you do have to be aware of the cover and table charges: usually the lady/man who is inviting you into the restaurant tells you about it so there wouldn't be any surprises. If they don't be aware though! God knows what other surprises the bill may hold ;)

The masks!!!! The masks are everywhere!!!! Cheap stuff looks pretty much the same but there are a couple authentic ones in town and their work is proper art :) You could get a cheapy one for about 10 euros or even less if it's a smaller one. For the real ones (and you pray that it is actually the real deal because all of them have some stickers or tags on saying they are real :S ) expect to cough out something in the range of 40+ euros. Even if you don't want to buy them, they are still interesting just to marvel at ;)

When going to Venice you should definitely go check out the little island of Burano nearby (waterbus takes you there). Now there you can see some bright and happy colours :) Murano, where they make the glass, didn't impress us with anything though :(

The gondola ride is €80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for 30 minutes. When I saw the price I said hell to the no! I'm not paying that kind of money for a boat ride! There are plenty of others who do though, but I think it's ridiculous

The food was great, as expected :) we found a little outdoor smoothie bar that offers you free samples and they were deliciozo!!!! So we kept going back there to try different flavours :) The carbonara didn't have a raw egg on it... Maybe that's a French thing?

Street vendors are rather pushy. The minute they see you even glancing their way they're on you like flies shouting hey Mister!! even when you're gone past. One guy freaking grabbed my shoulder so I would look back to the other guy far away in the distance! I don't even know what he was selling! But if you're into gucci-mucci and getting it cheap then be quick because not only selling them is illegal but buying too!

Last thing! When choosing a hotel make sure it is not in the middle of town! Think how the hell are you going to get there! With all the bridges and turns and dead ends! Yeap, choose wisely :) No buses (except for the water bus on the main canal) or even cars in the actual islands so walking is your only choice of transport.

Time to say goodbye

It's my last night in Aber. All my stuff (6 boxes, 1 suitcase) has been sent back home. I totally overestimated how much I can pack into my hand luggage, so fingers crossed that having my handbag with me on Monday won't cause any problems.

I knew that I have to leave this week, but it still came like a surprise and there's never enough time to do everything or say goodbye to everyone, not to mention getting together properly. At least I had a walk around town, even walked up this awful hill to go to library to donate some books and had my last meal at my favourite place. Then went for a walk on seafront and randomly met someone who to me is one of the greatest people I have ever met. It was really nice to have the chance to actually say goodbye to her before I leave.

Other than that...it is so weird. So much has changed since I first came here. Time has passed so fast. Yet, 3 years of life was worth only 78kg.

Finally, this is for you, Jazzz, another great person, who I wouldn't have met without coming to this uni, or who knows, life has its ways. Anyway, cheesy couples have this special song, at least in films :D Well, this song to me is our song, brings back so many happy memories...

That's it for this chapter in life.

Departure

I must say when Mr. Special said that we were going to Venice for a few days I was not the happiest person in the world... Because of the luggage situation... Moving from one country to another is a challenge all by itself, just think what 2 flights + weight restrictions add to it... Did I overreact over nothing? The initial plan was to go back to the UK with a car (I'll bring it, I'll bring it, oh no point bring it now, I'll bring it later etc etc etc). Now planes are involved...

I think this time was the hardest departure yet :( When I left home I started my uni life in a totally different country wow amazeballs etc. When I left Aber I was headed for Corsica, new experience bring it on :) When I left Corsica, well I went to Paris (need I say more why I was super excited for that????????). Now when I'm leaving Paris though... no new experiences, just the same old Aberkijaidjhfnheu :) Lets just say it's not my favourite place in the world... Not really looking forward to going back to uni there (btw had my timetable already - so early :S and turns out I can't choose language groups anymore!!! Why oh why that was like the highlight of the year :D). Kind of looking forward to going back to my old job but at the same time am terrified about the prospect of it...

Anyway what I miss:

  • Taking the metro
  • The policeman (or whoever) who was at the crossing making sure pedestrians wont get hit by cars. He was only there on school mornings
  • Saying Hello! :) to bus drivers when entering
  • Just saying Hello! :) to basically everyone when entering a room etc
  • My newly built neighbourhood :) Fort d'Issy where we lived :)
  • Fresh baguettes :) mmmmmmm fresh bread is delizioso :P
  • The chance to see the top of the Eiffel Tower pretty much from my window (ok I had to go out to the entrance to the Fort)
  • PARIS on the whole really...
  • and the French too ;)
I really thought I had a more poetic way of describing this :D

Will I ever get a chance to go back and live there again? Please please please someone find me a flat there because finding one is a complete nightmare...

Do you live here?

I was asked that question by the British border police and for a second I panicked... :D

Obviously I've watched too many Border Control episodes where they question immigrants etc but hey! I remembered this is the EU I'm legally allowed to enter and live in the UK even if I'm not their citizen.

The other thing bouncing in my head at the time was the same question or rather confusion: do I?!?!?! Do I live in the UK? or do I live in France? or Estonia? well... different establishments know different things :D Oh god I look like an undercover spy with 7 different passports that have my pic but different names etc :D But where do I live? At the moment nowhere to be honest: Moved all my stuff from France to Wales but at the same time never went to Wales and will be spending 2 weeks in Estonia in my home-home instead (and obviously using all the benefits that people of Tallinn get). Can you say yes I live in the UK?

My French bank for example still thinks I live in Corsica :S I didn't bother to change it because I thought it would be too much of a hassle (French bureaucracy :/) and since I had no access to the post box in Paris (didn't have the key no biggie) thought it best just to leave it be... My Estonian bank (and every other institution here) knows I still live in my home-home. Which isn't technically wrong, since my parents live here and if anyone needs to send anything it's better to send it here rather than me changing my foreign address with them every time I move :) My UK bank knows I have some Aber address where my friend lived last year... who knows who lives there at this time though :/

So what would you have answered? (Mind you I haven't been there for a year)

And every time I travel with my passport all the officials look at it like its fake :D They bend it every way possible and scan it? and god knows what else then look at me like da fudge is this? Then usually let me through. I was once asked how old am I and the other time where am I going. And now well this existential question that has no one clear answer.

I heard UK was on high immigration/terrorist alert maybe that raised the question? Or the fact that Mr. Special came with me that time and two different nationalities travelling together is weird or suspicious?

By this time (as there was no answer) the official was playing ping-pong with his eyes that darted back and forth from me to Mr.Special...

Bloopers

Maybe you've noticed by now that I'm not a completely normal person :) So now I'd like to share some of the funny moments of the summer that I haven't written down anywhere. I'm sure that there are way more but these are the ones I can remember
  • We were at Val d'Europe shopping centre and decided to have a frozen yoghurt for dessert. It was one of those places where you could add cookies and berries etc to it yourself and pay by weight. We had to choose from 4 different tastes and for the love of god Mr. Special could not understand what the third flavour was. The poor girl said the word about 5 times by now when he looked at me confused and said something completely different (Malibu? he said something else but I can't remember what exactly) so I joined the girl and said the word Mojito about another 5 times until he finally got it -.-
  • The buses only stop here if someone has pressed the stop button (or someone's waiting in the stop obvs). There are always a couple more people wanting to exit at the same stop as me so I don't usually bother pushing the button, although I always check that someone has indeed pushed it (you can see the light). One day I was so deep in my thoughts that noticed that I wanted to exit here when the bus had stopped to let someone in. So I ran to the doors that were closed - because no one else had wanted to exit there that day and I'd forgotten to push the button -.- So immediately pushed the button - nothing - and then was about to start shouting la porte s'il vous plait! (like they do sometimes when the doors have been closed too early) but then stopped myself and only a mere quiet eeek came out of my mouth and an attempt to move closer to the driver... :D A couple of people looked at me funny. I decided that I'll get off at the next stop... (It doesn't really matter) and then to not make myself look like a fool when I got off I started walking the same direction as the bus so the people on it would think that I did actually want to still stay in the bus... The bus took too long to go past me and I had to walk what felt like forever before I could turn around and go home... yeap I'm a genius :)
  • I think this happened the very next day even :D At porte de Versailles metro station there is one narrow staircase for exit - two rows: one for normal people and the other for rushing people. So for the very first time I found myself rushing past people and made to the top door just before a "slow" man. All would've been very fine if I could've gotten out the freaking door! No! They have some freaking system in place there that I didn't know about (because usually the door is always open due to someone being in front of me ALWAYS). So I pushed it, even kicked it with my foot until the man gently said pardon and easily opened the door!!!! Awkward!!! Turns out you have to push at a certain place (the middle) and it opens... Magic!
  • A couple of times I've gotten a text before work starts that my supervisor is ill and therefore I have the day off :) Both of those times I've been outside the office door reading it -.- And I always read that text a hundred times to make sure it does say that I get the day off :) So I make my way back home... and scare the hell out of Mr. Special. The first time I phoned the interphone (I do not know how it's called) from downstairs - no answer (I have no idea how to answer either because it's not like a normal phone but some high-tech screen etc :S) so made my way upstairs and rang the bell. Still nothing. Then tried the door - it was locked. (It's usually open because he always has to go outside to make his phone calls :D he has no signal inside a building EVER). Damn he must be out!!!! Then I heard a Hello?!? from the flat. Success, so I stayed quiet until he opened the door terrified that it might be the landlady (he doesn't speak french).
  • The second time I just went and rang the bell a couple of times. Another Hello?1?! then Jasmine?!?!? damn he got me this time?! He didn't open the door though, so I rang again and stepped away from the door, so he wouldn't see me immediately when opening the door. He finally opened the door and obvs didn't see anyone so started yelling something along the lines of: "So who's the silly begger playing games here eh? I'm locking..." by that time I was dying of laughter already so I stepped in front of the door literally scaring him sh**less :D :D :D :D :D :D :D How can a grown man be so scared? :D :D PS! I told you I'm not a normal person ;)
  • One day at work the two other interns went to have lunch just the two of them leaving me with the "bosses" (or just normal people who work there full time) and then my supervisor ran out to the post office. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to wait (didn't really want to but it would be weird if I just left on my own leaving the office door open). So I did until I heard the guys upstairs saying "Should we go for lunch now" my supervisor wasn't back and I didn't want to go with just the two of them so I panicked and ran out the door :D It's less awkward to eat alone - which I didn't because the two other interns and their friend had decided to eat at the park as well...
  • At work I have a perfect view to the door that has toned glass window so I can see people standing behind the door but they can't see me unless they really look inside. One day there was a weird man standing there trying to peek inside, (the other girl who is closer to the door but has her back to it said later that she heard him trying to put his hand through the letter box), then tried opening the door - luckily it was locked :) Then he rang the doorbell, the girl went to open as usual but as soon as she saw him she backed down and waited for our supervisor to come downstairs to open the door herself. So she did and stood right in front of it to ask what he wanted. He was desperate to get in the room for some reason and asked for a piece of paper (hoping the supervisor would step away from the door to get it probs), so our supervisor asked the other girl to hand her the piece of paper. The man was so close to her trying to peek through and see what and who's inside. When he got the paper he just left :S :S WTF just happened????????????????????????
  • Today when I went upstairs to have my lunch I felt kind of funny. Thought my bra strap had fallen or something so tried adjusting it and guess what? I couldn't find it!!! I don't have a bra on!!!?!!?!! What??? How?? and how did I only notice that like 5 hours after leaving my flat????? Luckily it's kinda cold and I had a sweater on so no one could hopefully tell. I want to die right now!!! How did this even happen???????
  • This reminds me of a time when Mr. Special went out to take his phonecalls and then 10 seconds later came back rushingly. He was only wearing a t-shirt and boxers!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA btw he had put shoes on though! which made it even funnier!
  • In Belgium he forgot to put shoes on. Unfortunately we didn't make it far :( just to the hotel lift :D :D :D :D :D :D
  • My french techer from Aber sent me an e-mail in the beginning of summer if we could meet up in Paris (just a normal procedure for him to check my progress etc), I said a couple of times that I don't really have time (which is technically true). but when he proposed a time I just didn't respond to him.... Still haven't... Hope that he forgot.... Please? I'll just say I had problems with the e-mail otherwise :D

That's it for now although I'm sure there are more happenings like those above I just can't remember at the moment ;)

Mont Saint-Michel

I kind of expected it to be bigger... and maybe a bit less touristy but I wasn't disappointed as some people said they were :)

We took the bus from Rennes early in the morning (9.45) to the main access that now has a brand new visitor complex with tourist information and toilets etc. From there you could choose from 3 options to get to the actual site: walk (45 minutes on a newly built footbridge), take a free shuttle bus (25 minutes) or pay for a seat on the horse carriage (35 minutes). We chose the free bus that was jam-packed with people. Even the first bus driver (who drove us from Rennes to Mont St-Michel) said that the site is absolutely filled with people and when wanting to come back with the bus be there early! so we'd expected that.

The town/island (? I really don't know how to call it properly) was absolutely lovely with its few streets filled with shops and restaurants. That was one negative side though :( Everything was aimed at tourists so it had lost its authenticity a bit but the streets that were a bit higher up weren't as crowded and didn't have any shops :) To simplify and create an image in your mind there are 3 main streets/paths - one on the very edge of the town with stunning views to the mainland and mud that people were walking on barefeet. That was lined with restaurants on one side. Second a level down in the town lined with only touristy shops and restaurants (mostly the same ones that had a terrace on the first street) filled with people. Crowds everywhere! Then there's the third level - mainly staircases connecting the abbey - the highest point - to the second street. All of them are basically an endless staircase going up to the abbey or down to the entrance gate. And that's about it. Just a lovely little tiny staircase town :)

The abbey is huge and totally worth going into :) Somehow we're always lucky with queues and had to wait there for max 15 mins before entering :) when we exited the queue was well longer than 30 minutes. So beware. That is the main tourist atrraction there and you can be assured that the people you see on the streets will probably want to go there sooner or later ;)

That's about it really :P What you see (at first when approaching the island) is what you get. There's nothing on the "other side" of the island.

It took us a couple of hours to walk through everything. We got there around 11 and by 3 we were done - this included enjoying a galette in a restaurant and later a coke and cake at a different café. Since we had time for our 5.20 bus back to Rennes we decided to walk back on the foot bridge, taking lots of pictures of it and marvelling at it one last time :)

Going back the bus was absolutely full and we were quite surprised that they were still selling tickets to people because there were people who had previously purchased a return ticket but they got another coach to come pick the people who didn't fit into ours so no one was luckily left behind :) Some people came from Paris for a day and had to catch the TGV back! So I think it was organised perfectly (you could hear people complaining though).

Playlist

Why is it that every time I make this post then practically right after publishing it I find new cool music that I become addicted to? And by the time comes to make another post I've become pretty much sick of them already... Because I'm that kind of person who listens to one song for a hundred thousand times in a row...

Anyway quite recently I discovered Bastille!!! Not their own songs (that everyone's heard), although they are decent as well. I absolutely fell in love with their covers! I had known that they've done a few covers before but had no idea that they even released an album full of awesome covers!!!! It wuld be so easy to just fill this post with just Bastille, but I do have some other (re)discoveries as well :( :)

Please go listen to Other People's Heartache album if you're interested. I had to make a tough choice: which cover is da best?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I'll put here the one I listen to the most... I think...

Requiem for Blue Jeans

Secondly my other big crush this month :) I just love the feeling in this song :)
Magic! - Rude

Next a song that's lyrics you must NOT listen to! Because I think they're pretty stupid :D But I love the rhytm and vibe of the song anyway and not paying any attention to what she actually says isn't hard at all ;)
Tinashe - 2on

A nice sexy song ;)
Trey Songz - NaNa

And finally a new Estonian song - I do have 2 candidates for this as well but I'ma put the newest one here :)
Oops looks like I can't find it :( Maybe it's that new :D So my second choice then, in Estonian as well (The pther one would've been in English)
Triin Niitoja & John4 - Jää
This was my absolute favourite Idol contestants on her season :) So I guess I'll like every song she comes out with ;)

This has been a good 2 months :)

Taking Stock

Cooking : absolutely nothing because I'm a working gal and Mr. Special has taken the roll of a Desperate Houseman this summer ;)

Drinking : Lipton lemon Ice tea and water

Reading: the series of "Minu" books. At the moment "Minu Bangkok" - that isn't interesting at all :( The series is comprised of books that talk about a country/city, written by Estonians who live/ have lived there.

Wanting: To finally get my final installment of the Erasmus grant (yeap, still waiting!!!!)

Looking: forward to going home for two week :) Haven't been there since Christmas

Playing: Sims2 :D my biggest addiction ever I think... Sims3 is too detailed for my taste :D In addition Mr. Special has downloaded Candy Crush, Bubble Witch Saga and Farm Heroes that I must play as well.

Wasting: time reading blogs when I should actually be focused on working :( Don't judge that quick there's nothing that needs to be done urgently just perfecting the translation at this final stage.

Sewing: my button shirts together in the boob area because otherwise it'll be sooo fugly. I don't know why though because the size otherwise is perf and I don't have massive boobs :S

Wishing: to miraculously be able to speak fluent French, otherwise I'll be in trouble next academic year...

Enjoying: my last weeks in France and Paris before heading back to my "normal" life

Waiting: for the clock to strike 6PM already so I could go to Montparnasse and get on the train to Rennes for a lovely surprise weekend trip Mr. Special has arranged

Liking: my new clothes that I bought from Belgium :D I just feel so much better for some reason :D

Wondering: If I'll be the only one who going back to uni without speaking fluent french :S (only a month to go :( so scared)

Loving: my studio flat in Issy

Hoping: to return to Paris soon for longer

Marvelling: my pastel blue nails :)

Needing: to go to the dentist :(

Smelling: awful as Mr. Special once so romantically put it. He said it in such a dreamy way :) Obviously he actually wanted to say amazing :D I laughed for a long time.

Wearing: my new shoes (that are hurting me beyond belief :(), new trousers, new top and new cardigan - I'm in love with my new clothes :D :D :D never felt such a rush before

Following: blogs every day like a maniac... I clearly have too much free time in the office...

Noticing: that people here walk in the door without knocking! It's weird, luckily I see them before they enter because I have the best view to the door but since I'm not the closest one I don't have to ask them what they want ;)

Knowing: nothing apparently since I've been stuck on this for about 10 minutes now :S You know nothing John Snow!

Thinking: about my dissertation topics and collecting inspiration already

Feeling: so happy :)

Bookmarking: Blogs again, what else :D

Opening: one particular blog page thousand times a day to see if she's posted something or to see if anyone from her bloglist has posted something new. Obsessed much?

Giggling: at Mr. Specials special sayings and moments ;)

Listening: to the awesome covers Bastille has done to oh so many songs :)

Watching: Home and Away and the Walking Dead at the moment :)

PS! This was written on a Friday :)

Demerits of Paris

Paris is the capital of romance :) Everyone knows that. Everyone's seen the pictures of the amazing Parisian architecture. It truly is amazing and I like that it has been kind of conserved in a time bubble - the old typical Parisian house styles :)

Doesn't it look like a perfect walk? If you're lucky it will be. If you're not so lucky then a minute after taking this picture you'll run away from the spot trying to suppress vomit because it absolutely stinks of urine there :( (I do not a have a strong stomach at all). That's the side of Paris that you don't usually hear about but it is visible (smellable in this case) wayyyy too often in my opinion :( Especially on the banks of the river and metro stations. I once saw a woman let her child (5-6y?) pee in the gutter next to the stairs to the metro entrance. Eeew! Yuck! I understand when a child has to go he has to go but come on!

By the smell, it even seems that it is the "normal" thing to do, under a bridge, behind the corner etc. And not just one person does it (or the homeless) because the stench is often literally unbearable! Luckily the streets are free of it :) So you can indeed enjoy a walk through Paris :)

On the streets though there are other threats - hustlers, scammers, pickpockets. -.- It may seem like ,especially if you read the tripadvisor forum, that everyone's out to get your money. A while ago I saw a post there asking for advice how to be safe. And one answer was to hide all the credit cards, cash, documents in a bag that goes discreelty under your shirt, or neckpurse or whatever thingies are invented for this. Best if not to take anything with you at all, photocopy your passport etc etc etc. A copy of an actual comment:

If you are nervous about losing your passport on the way to your hotel, then put in the safest place you can before you leave the airport...in your bra, down your pants, in a money belt...etc.

Bring a camera that if you lose it or it is stolen, you won't feel like killing yourself. Only carry cash you need for the day and 1 credit card. Leave the rest of your cash and spare credit cards at the hotel. A cell phone is a hard one...if you loose your expensive phone that will suck, but you'll live. I think most people can do without carrying a tablet.

If you really are anxious then by all means stick to taking taxis and avoid public transport and crowds. If you stay in the tourist areas, you can get to most places for 10 - 15 euros.

Ummm.... just chill for a second eh? :D Putting your passport in your bra? Isn't that a bit too much??? Bring the camera you use normally - don't go buying some crappy camera that'll take crappy pictures because it might get stolen. Just keep an eye on it always and don't leave it lying anywhere on its own (common sense?).  Same with your wallet - no need to hide it in your buttcrack to avoid it being stolen. Just don't make it ridicoulously easy to spot and steal. I always carry everything in a clutch cross body bag that doesn't even have a zipper and yet I still have everything... Miracle. I do restrain from keeping it on my back where I can't see or feel when someones tampering with it. But that's it... If you are Richie Rich by all means stick to taxis - but be aware they might be dodgy as well! Best to just stay in your hotel for the entire trip and just look at the pictures on the internet...

The (sad) reality is that indeed there are pickpockets in Paris. Not denying it. But no need to crazy over it, just be aware of your surroundings and don't flash cash or phones around every 5 seconds and you should be fine... You don't see any Parisians walking around daily with their moneybelts, using only taxis etc. They are actually reading books (on public transport) and not watching their belongins like a hawk... So chill, you'll enjoy the trip much more :)

Has anyone ever seen how those moneybelts are even used? Hilarious me thinks. Everytime you have to pay for something you show your hairy stomach (I've seen men doing it) to everyone and take forever to pay for something because obviously you can't leave the register before putting the change you were given back to the moneybelt and then hiding it under your shirt, tucking the shirt back into you pants etc. Not attractive at all.

I have mentioned the petition girls and the Monty players in the Eiffel Tower post (I hope) so I'll just say when you see them just ignore them and then you can be paranoid and clutch all your belongins in your hands because they are professionals and usually just distract you with their petition while their accomplice steals you blind (seen it happen myself - luckily they managed to get the phone back from the girls).

When you've succesfully dodged all the scammers and yelled NON! to everyone that even glances a look in your direction (hey! they were only trying to help you find what you're looking for, no need to be rude!) you'll find yourself in the endless queue to go to the Louvre/Versailles/Eiffel Tower/Catacombs etc etc.  :) Should've brought a book like all the other Parisians.

Then the day is finally over and you can return to your tiny overly priced appartment that you basically sold your kidney to afford :( Look on the bright side though, at least you are in Paris and not living in the Banlieue (ew, that's like 5 minutes further with the metro, how can people live there?), somehow you've managed the impossible and gotten yourself an appartment (okay it's actually a studio but who cares?), never mind the fact that the inside isn't as nice as the outside :( And you have to take your luggage up to the fourth floor by a narrow spiral staircase. Fun! :) And then you find out you can hear absolutely everything your next door neighbor does and says :) Totally worth it though :) Time to chillax, oh wait... where could I get cheap furniture????

Other than that I think Paris is absolutely wonderful and it holds a special place in my heart and I wish I could've lived in Paris (not 5 mins from it) this summer and that I would not have to leave so soon.
